Final Day
11 April 1999
Wembley Stadium,
London
The final match of the 1999 season's Five Nations rugby championship was played at Wembley Stadium on the 11 April. While England hoped for a victory to claim their fourth Grand Slam of the 1990s, Wales' ambition was to build on their recent win against France at Paris. The Wembley crowd was entertained by two visiting Welshmen: Max Boyce led with his 'Hymns and Arias', and Tom Jones sang 'Delilah'. The final score, to the delight of the Wales supporters, was 31 - 32 to Wales, with Neil Jenkins converting Scott Gibbs' try in the closing minutes. In the summer of 1998 I was somehow given a job with a publishing firm in England, my prejudices clearly cooled enough in the close-season to make me seem like a reasonable human being. Living in a rancid shared house in Stroud and lodging with a fervent Gloucester supporter was not a good environment to be in as Wales kicked off their Championship with losses against Ireland and Scotland. Things got better with the wins over Italy and France, but a tactical retreat to the parental home in Llangors again seemed to be the best option before a ‘home’ game against a seemingly unstoppable England side at Wembley.
