Six teams go into Round 17 separated by just four points as the battle for the fourth semi-final spot ignites in this weekend’s Gallagher Premiership Rugby fixtures. Worcester Warriors open proceedings against Bristol Bears at 7.45pm on Friday, with the hosts’ director of rugby Steve Diamond chasing his first win in charge following a 36-12 defeat against former club Sale. The sides met twice in November, with Warriors avenging a 27-5 defeat at Ashton Gate by beating the Bears 68-13 in the Premiership Rugby Cup.
A semi-final looks out of reach for both but Bristol have improved in the new year, recording two bonus-point victories, while they scored three tries in the dying minutes of last week’s bonkers 49-32 loss against London Irish. The Exiles will hope to build on that victory when they host Saracens at 3pm on Saturday, looking for a repeat of the reverse fixture which saw Irish stage the mother of all comebacks. Despite playing 60 minutes with 14 men, Irish overcame a 26-point deficit in the final eighteen minutes, Kyle Rowe’s hat-trick try in added time securing a sensational 34-34 draw. They sit in eighth but Sarries, who sit in second place after wins against Harlequins and Bath, will provide a stern test. Wasps travel to Harlequins on Saturday in another decisive encounter, with both teams separated by a point either side of the top four spots.
A 16-0 lead wasn’t enough for Wasps when they faced Quins in November, as the comeback kings scored 26 unanswered points after the interval thanks to tries from Tyrone Green and Scott Steele. However, the champions have had a stuttering start to the year, suffering defeats against Saracens, Sale and Bath, while Wasps are in a lethal mood. They dispatched title challengers Saracens, Leicester and Exeter before scoring three tries in five minutes in victory against Bath last weekend, and Wasps will see a Quins scalp as a statement of intent. Saturday will also include a top versus bottom clash as Leicester Tigers travel to Bath Rugby. The Tigers are in imperious form, completing the double over rivals Northampton Saints last time out and taking their tally to 90 points across the two derbies.
History is on Bath’s side, their 40-23 defeat in Round 8 only the second in the sides last seven encounters, also bolstered by Lions forward Taulupe Faletau’s return, with key players including Joe Cokanasiga and Danny Cipriani back in training. Despite their damaging derby defeat, Northampton are only three points off fourth with a game in hand and a win is vital when they host Sale this Saturday. The Saints went down 30-6 in the reverse fixture and they now face the added threat of England centre Manu Tuilagi and World Cup winning scrum-half Faf de Klerk. However, Sale’s away record has been unconvincing with only one win on the road, and their defence will need to show resilience against a Saints side averaging nearly 30 points a game. Newcastle have been without a win since November, when Brett Connon’s late penalty edged a 15-14 victory against Exeter Chiefs, and the Falcons will need a similar performance when the sides meet again in Sunday’s 3pm kick-off. Chiefs ended their run of three defeats in the previous round with a 24-15 victory over Gloucester to remain in the semi-final hunt and they will be keen to make it consecutive wins in the north-east.
