Canterbury have held off a fast-finishing Auckland Storm in a Farah Palmer Cup round-two thriller in Christchurch on Saturday. The hosts at Rugby Park were sitting pretty with a 21-point lead 10 minutes into the second half, but Auckland stormed back with four unanswered tries in 18 minutes to hit the front. Leading 27-26 with less than 10 minutes to play, the visitors looked poised to cap an unlikely victory, however Canterbury weren’t giving this one up without a fight and hit back almost immediately when winger Martha Mataele crashed over under the sticks for her second try of the afternoon. Auckland had their chances to find a late winner, but when it mattered most Canterbury showcased their dominance up front, firstly winning a huge scrum penalty against the feed on their own 22m, then having captain Alana Bremner clinch a crucial steal with 90 seconds left.
