Round 16 of Gallagher Premiership Rugby took us beyond 4,600 points for the season with a stunning round of matches that brought 46 tries from the six games, and an average of more than 50 points a match! London Irish led the points chart with Wasps just pipping them in terms of tries scored, while the Bristol Bears ran for more metres and beat more defenders Gloucester Rugby’s tackle count was extremely impressive too as they made 238 successful tackles – 69 more than the next best team.

The action got underway with a Friday night double-header headlined by the East Midlands derby as Leicester Tigers claimed bragging rights with a 35-20 win over Northampton Saints. Alex Mitchell gave the visitors an early lead before Nemani Nadolo marked his return from injury with a brace and another try from Julian Montoya put Tigers 22-10 up at the break. Bryce Hegarty and Karl Wilkins traded tries in the second half while Chris Ashton was sin-binned on his debut for the hosts but the league leaders held on to secure a bonus-point win. Tigers fly-half Freddie Burns, named Man of the Match, said: “It's always a tough game against our nearest and dearest, but the boys up front were outstanding. “We went out there and got the job done. They came to play, that opening 10-15 minutes was a bit helter-skelter and we knew we had to tighten the game up a little bit. "We managed to do that, get the score back pretty soon after we conceded, grab the momentum and we kept it from there. Confidence is high. We'll enjoy the win but there's definitely ways we can improve and it's going to be a tough challenge at The Rec next week."

Friday night’s other contest also delivered a try-fest as London Irish staged a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Bristol Bears 49-32 despite a late rally from the hosts. Tries from Siva Naulago and Tom Whiteley, either side of a Nick Phipps effort, saw Pat Lam’s men establish a 15-10 advantage going into the half-time interval at Ashton Gate. But the Exiles stormed ahead with tries from Phipps, Benhard Janse van Rensburg, Ben Loader, Paddy Jackson and Tom Pearson as Bears were reduced to 14-men by a red card for Naulago. Bears went down fighting, however, and managed to salvage a losing try bonus point thanks to a late flurry of scores from replacements Theo Strang, Ashley Challenger and Jake Kerr.

Three more contests provided a Gallagher Premiership Rugby feast on Saturday, including an important 24-15 victory for Exeter Chiefs over top four rivals Gloucester Rugby. Gloucester had been on a three-game winning run and George Skivington’s side hit the ground running when Freddie Clarke put the Cherry & Whites ahead with their first attack. Chiefs drew level through Jack Innard before Patrick Schickerling’s try early in the second half put the Devonians in front following a yellow card for Billy Twelvetrees. Further tries from Olly Woodburn and Tom O’Flaherty secured the bonus point for Chiefs and while Gloucester responded through Santiago Carreras and Charlie Chapman tries after a yellow card for Dafydd Jenkins, the hosts held on to move back into the top six. Elsewhere on Saturday, Wasps moved up to fifth in the standings with an entertaining 41-24 victory over Bath Rugby in Coventry after the visitors played most of the second half with 14 men. Rob Miller opened the scoring for the hosts before Tom Prydie responded, with Taulupe Faletau also scoring on his return to action in between tries for Wasps’ Biyi Alo and Elliott Stooke. Bath trailed 17-14 at the break and soon lost Semesa Rokoduguni to a red card after the restart, only for Ben Spencer to put the Blue, Black and Whites into an unlikely lead. Yet Wasps responded with four tries as Alfie Barbeary and Paolo Odogwu both crossed twice in the final 11 minutes to secure a fourth successive league win for Lee Blackett’s side.

Sale Sharks also provided a boost to their top four ambitions on Saturday, defeating Worcester Warriors 36-12 at the AJ Bell on former boss Steve Diamond’s return to the north west. Sam James kicked off the scoring for Sharks before the lead changed hands three times as Tom Howe and Niall Annett scored for Warriors either side of Arron Reed dotting down for the hosts. But Sharks pulled clear in the second half as Manu Tuilagi, Curtis Langdon, Janse van Rensburg and Reed again all crossed to help the home side secure a bonus-point win. Saracens rounded off the weekend by claiming London derby bragging rights over Harlequins, with the Men in Black defeating the reigning Gallagher Premiership Rugby champions 19-10 at the StoneX Stadium. Tom Woolstencroft and Sean Maitland both crossed for the hosts in the first half but Danny Care's score plus five points from Tommy Allan saw the two sides go into the half-time break at 10-apiece. But three penalties from Alex Lozowski - and a powerful display from the Saracens forwards - ultimately proved enough as the home side kept the pressure on Tigers at the top of the standings.

Challenge Europeen 2010 2011 Final Stade Francais Harlequins
