Cette épreuve voit s'affronter cinq provinces de Nouvelle-Zélande, cinq d'Afrique du Sud et quatre États australiens sous la forme d'un championnat (matches allers-retours). Les quatre premiers accèdent aux demi-finales.   Ce sont là encore les Néo-Zélandais les plus forts, avec, entre 1996 et 2006, six victoires pour les Crusaders de Christchurch, trois pour les Blues d'Auckland, les deux restantes étant à l'actif de l'équipe australienne des « Brumbies », aux environs de Canberra.
