A fast start for Saints saw Alex Mitchell and Tommy Freeman score tries inside the opening 20 minutes, though their advantage was dented when Steward crossed for the visitors at the end of the first half. Alex Coles restored Saints' gap five minutes into the second period, though Guy Porter provided an immediate response for Tigers as they attempted to close the deficit.
Yellow cards for Juarno Augustus, Emmanual Iyogun and Mitchell eventually cost the hosts, with late tries from Ashton, George Martin and two from Steward sealing an ultimately emphatic victory for the reigning champions.

Northampton Saints forwards coach Phil Dowson: "When you put a side under pressure, they’ll give penalties away and if you give enough penalties away, you get yellow cards. We start doing things you wouldn’t necessarily do, so pressure will lead to ill-discipline, ill-discipline will lead to punishment and I think saw that today."

Leicester Tigers head coach Steve Borthwick: "I’d like to talk about the impact Ben Youngs and Phil Cokanasiga had, and Chris Ashton. The impact in that last 20 minutes was very good and I think over the course of a season you need a quality squad that impacts when start and when you finish. I say to the players that everyone wants to start, but I want the best 80 [minutes] we possibly can in each of those positions. I thought they added enormously to the platform that was set by the people who started."
